How much should a small business website cost in the UK?

The short answer on UK small business website cost

A small business website in the UK usually costs anywhere from around £500 for a basic template site to £5,000 or more for a fully bespoke build, with most small businesses landing somewhere between £1,000 and £3,000. The range is wide, and that is not the industry being cagey. It reflects different things being sold under the same word.

A £500 site and a £5,000 site are both called a website, but one is a template you fill in yourself and the other is custom-built, written for you, and set up to be found in search. Knowing which you are buying is the whole game.

What actually drives the price of a small business website

Four things move the cost more than anything else.

The first is how many pages you need. A single landing page is far less work than a seven-page site with separate pages for each of your services, so it costs less.

The second, and the one people underestimate most, is who writes the words. A site where you supply all the content is cheaper than one where a professional writes it for you, because writing clear, persuasive copy that ranks in search is the part that actually takes time. It is also the part that decides whether the site brings in enquiries, so it is rarely worth skimping on.

The third is whether the build is bespoke or template-based. A template is quick and cheap and looks like a template. A custom build costs more and looks like your business. For a lot of small businesses a well-chosen template is perfectly fine, but it is worth knowing which you are paying for.

The fourth is the extra functionality, such as online booking, live chat, or an integration with your reviews. Each adds a bit of cost and, done well, a lot of value, because these are the features that turn a visitor into a customer.

Paying once versus paying monthly

There are two common ways to pay, and they suit different businesses.

Paying upfront means a single cost for the build, after which the site is yours and you pay only for hosting and upkeep. It works out cheaper overall and suits anyone who would rather own the site outright.

Paying monthly spreads the build cost over a year or more, usually with hosting and support rolled in, so there is no large lump sum at the start. It costs a little more in total, but it protects your cash flow, which matters when you are getting going. Neither is right or wrong. It comes down to whether you would rather pay once or pay as you go.

The ongoing website cost most people forget

The build price is not the whole story. A website needs hosting to be online, and it needs maintaining to stay secure and working, which is an ongoing monthly cost on top of the build. For a small business that usually runs somewhere between £20 and £150 a month depending on how much support and content help is included.

This is not an upsell to be suspicious of. A website left unhosted and unmaintained slows down, breaks, and becomes a security risk, so the ongoing cost is real and worth budgeting for from the start. Be wary of any quote that leaves it out, because it will turn up later.

How to know you’re paying a fair price

Judge a quote on what you actually get and how long it takes, not on the headline number alone. A cheap site that nobody finds is not a bargain, and an expensive one is not automatically better. Ask what is included, who writes the content, whether it is built to be found in search, and what the ongoing costs are. A straight answer to those tells you far more than the price on its own.

The cheapest option rarely brings in the most work, and the dearest is rarely worth the premium. The right price is the one that gets you a site that earns its keep, at a cost your business can carry.
